  1. Today, in the electronic age of instantaneous 
  2. communication, I believe that our survival, and at 
  3. the very least our comfort and happiness, is 
  4. predicated on understanding the nature of our new 
  5. environment, because unlike previous environmental 
  6. changes, the electric media constitute a total and 
  7. near instantaneous transformation of culture, 
  8. values and attitudes. This upheaval generates great 
  9. pain and identity loss, which can be ameliorated 
  10. only through a consciousness of its dynamics. If we 
  11. understand the revolutionary transformations 
  12. caused by new media, we can anticipate and control 
  13. them; but if we continue in our self-induced 
  14. subliminal trance, we will be their slaves.
